Learning to Live with the Good and Bad of Social Media

I most likely would have never had a Facebook account. Then I enrolled in a graduate program at Richard Stockton of New Jersey. The master’s program was for Instructional Technology. Trying to reach my goals to complete one of my classes I needed to use Tweeter, and Facebook social sites. This was my first encounter with these sites. I was very reluctant I made a Facebook page and know have a tweeter account. I understand the premise of these sites is to connect with friends and family, spread information and advertise for new company products.

With more and more people on these media sites it is important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of such site. One main disadvantage is the amount of personal information shared, which leaves one open for many disappointments. Where you upload and maintain your site and mange it could become a problem if you are at work and the guidelines as to use of Internet are not clear. Some employers have started formal training of their companies polices about such sites. However, the advantages out way the disadvantage 9 to 1, just like the viewing of ones post to the likes or comments.

The young and the old of society, use social media sites including businesses now are using these sites to get information out. Replacing the need for websites. However, the caution is that the sites if used for business should be designed for the target audience.

Many organizations have found social media site beneficial for promoting fundraiser for all different events and causes. One such recent one, which impacted the area I am writing from, was the funds needed to help the victims of Super Storm Sandy. Not only did the affected people need funds they needed the supplies needed to help them move forward.   Social media sites helped out in a big way also with getting the meeting to attend with regards to rebuilding and forums where information and date deadlines where discussed.

I do believe that although reluctant at first to join these sites. I am delighted and connected and reconnected with many friend and family.

How to Lose Stress While Obtaining a Graduate Degree

After being stressed about my decision to go back and obtaining my graduate degree, my doctors started to complain about my weight gain, and boarder line high blood pressure. Losing contact with many friends and even family has made a very happy little gnome a grumpy one. Feeling isolated on a deserted island, I turned to the web for comfort and ideas on how to shed some of these feelings. Now I know I am not the only one wishing that a bottle with a degree would wash ashore. Of course anything worth learning takes time and the time put in, is always worth it. However, while one is juggling many life’s struggles there are times when the chest gets tight and the blood pressure elevates. This blog is one that sets forth a guideline for de-stressing. I plan on at least trying most if not all of these suggestions. The suggestions were to plan study time, relax with free time spent with friends and family, exercise, and reflection on accomplishments. All of great suggestions which when life caught me by surprise this semester I was not able to do, as a result I have had all the bad side effects of getting a master’s degree. Moving forward I hope I can have a plan of attack and feel more confident that I can at least finish what I started.

Why Teach Art?

I am an art teacher and believe in my heart that art relates to all disciplines.  However, arts are the first things to get cut out of school budgets and looked at art education as the budget blackhole.  Instead of looking at what the arts has to offer this article offers just that what keeping the arts in the schools can do. The article is a short read and gives a fresh view on what everyone needs and wants to know to be successful members of a fast moving society. This article illuminates the idea that through keeping the arts in the school students needs are addressed, and learns the work ethic it takes to complete a task to the best of ones ability and then rejoicing in the success of their hard work building ones self esteem. The next major point addressed was that art teaches visual syntax through the decoding of many art works and symbols used in those art works students be come better at decoding visuals they are bombarded with every day, which produces an enhancement of verbal expression. The last point the article illuminates is the fact that art it’s self is an expression of the values of society, ones inner taught, and expressions of ones beliefs about many topics. topics which are hard to understand without the visas to accompany those topics, war, peace, environmental impact, just to name a few. This article opens the argument for the arts to be a main stay in any school because it touches upon subjects in a way that no other discipline will.

I find myself defending keeping the arts in the education of our youth for these very same reasons. I believe that society reaps the benefit of every dollar they spend in the arts creating positive pragmatic thinkers who can solve problems creativity and are not afraid to try a different solution.
